Maybe you were drilling sentences in Anki and the rhythm of recall locked in so perfectly that twenty minutes evaporated without you noticing.
That state — when effort dissolves, attention narrows, and you’re fully absorbed in the task — is not accidental. It’s one of the most studied phenomena in psychology. It has specific, measurable conditions. And it turns out that effective language learning, when designed correctly, meets nearly all of them.
What Flow Is, and Why It Matters for Learning
In the early 1970s, psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi began interviewing rock climbers, chess players, surgeons, and musicians about their peak experiences. He found a remarkably consistent pattern across activities and cultures: when people described their best moments of performance and satisfaction, they described the same subjective state. Why SRS and i+1 Content Are Natural Flow Generators
Spaced repetition systems like Anki are, at their core, difficulty-calibration engines. A well-constructed SRS deck continuously adjusts the difficulty of each card based on your performance. Cards you know well appear less often. Cards you struggle with appear more frequently. The system algorithmically maintains you near the boundary of what you can recall and what you can’t.
This is, by design, the flow channel.
When SRS is working correctly, most cards should feel like they require genuine effort — a moment of retrieval struggle followed by successful recall. Too many easy cards and you’re bored (below the flow channel). Too many impossible cards and you’re frustrated (above it). The scheduling algorithm’s entire purpose is to keep you in that narrow band where each card demands just enough cognitive effort to stay fully engaged.
The same logic applies to comprehensible input at i+1. Reading or listening to material where you understand roughly 95% of the content — Nation’s (2006) threshold for incidental vocabulary acquisition — means you encounter unknown elements frequently enough to stay challenged but not so frequently that comprehension collapses. You’re pulled forward by the narrative or the conversation, using context to bridge small gaps, operating at exactly the level of difficulty that promotes both acquisition and absorption.
This is why many learners report that reading a gripping novel in their target language produces flow more reliably than any textbook exercise. The narrative interest provides intrinsic motivation, the i+1 difficulty provides cognitive challenge, and the immediate feedback of comprehension (or failure to comprehend) closes the loop. All three conditions of flow — challenge-skill balance, clear goals, and immediate feedback — are present simultaneously.
Signs You’re Outside the Channel
Recognizing when you’ve drifted out of the flow channel is a practical skill that improves with attention. The two failure modes feel different and require different corrections.
Boredom (challenge too low): You’re going through the motions. Your mind wanders to unrelated thoughts. You check your phone. The material feels repetitive. You can predict what comes next. In SRS terms, you’re pressing “Easy” on most cards without effort. In reading or listening, you’re not encountering anything new. The correct response is not to push through with more willpower; it’s to adjust the difficulty.
How to Design Study Sessions That Facilitate Flow
Csikszentmihalyi identified several conditions that reliably promote flow. Here’s how to apply each one to language study:
Clear goals. “Study Japanese for an hour” is vague. “Complete 50 Anki reviews, then read one chapter of this novel, then write a 200-word journal entry” is specific. Flow requires knowing what success looks like at every moment. Break sessions into discrete, completable tasks with defined endpoints.
Immediate feedback. SRS provides this inherently — you flip the card and know instantly whether you recalled correctly. Time spent in flow is not equivalent to time spent grinding through material you resent. The quality of attention matters as much as the quantity.

For language learners, this means that building a consistent study routine is not just about discipline — it’s about creating the attentional preconditions for flow. When your daily study session is as automatic as brushing your teeth, you eliminate the friction that prevents deep engagement. You don’t negotiate with yourself about whether to study. You don’t waste ten minutes deciding which resource to use. You sit down, the routine carries you through the setup, and within minutes you’re engaged.
The key is that the routine should automate the structure of the session while preserving variability in the content. Same time, same place, same sequence of activities — but the specific sentences, texts, conversations, and topics change constantly. Structure provides the scaffold; novelty provides the challenge.
Contrasting View: Flow Isn’t Always the Goal
It would be misleading to suggest that all effective language learning should feel effortless. The research on deliberate practice, pioneered by Ericsson, Krampe, and Tesch-Romer (1993), presents a fundamentally different model of skill acquisition — one where discomfort is not a bug but a feature.
Ericsson’s framework, developed from studies of expert performers in music, chess, and athletics, holds that improvement at advanced levels requires practice that is specifically designed to target weaknesses, that operates at the edge of failure, and that is not inherently enjoyable. For language learning, deliberate practice looks like: drilling a pronunciation contrast you consistently fail, writing and rewriting sentences using a grammar structure that confuses you, forcing yourself to use formal register when you’d rather fall back on casual speech, or doing timed speaking exercises on unfamiliar topics. These activities are uncomfortable. They don’t produce flow. And they’re necessary.
The resolution is not that one framework is right and the other wrong. It’s that they serve different functions at different stages and for different skills. Flow-conducive activities — extensive reading, engaging conversations, compelling media consumption — build fluency, consolidate existing knowledge, and maintain motivation. Deliberate practice activities — targeted drilling, error correction, systematic grammar work — build accuracy, address specific weaknesses, and push through plateaus.
A well-designed study plan alternates between both. The flow-producing activities are what make language learning sustainable over years.
